The Da Vinci Code claims that the Knights Templar was the military
arm of the secret society the Priory of Sion,  which was given the
task of uncovering documents purportedly hidden beneath the
Jerusalem temple, documents that would confirm the ancient
secret. The Knights discovered these “Sangreal documents” and
subsequently became fabulously wealthy, either through blackmail
or because the Church bought their silence. By the 1300s, their
power and influence had become a major threat to the Vatican,
which launched a campaign of terror, labeling the Knights Templar
heretics and evildoers. The Knights’ ranks were decimated, but their
secret documents were never discovered, kept hidden by the
elusive members of the Priory of Sion.
